Gopuras (Gateway Buildings)

The more complex sanctuaries usually had a gopura through which one entered. It was aligned with the entrance to the main kalan, and stradled the boundary-wall of the sanctuary. We have several examples:

from the 10th century, we have the small:

My Son C2

which is in a line between the main kalan C1 and the mandapa to that group, D2

from the 11th century, we have the much larger and more independant:

Gopura at Bánh Ít

one can see its position relative to the rest of the complex in:

The general view of Bánh Ít

(it's on the right)

finally, from the 13th century, we have:

The gopura at Pô Klaung Gerai

Like My Son C2, this gopura stradles the boundary-wall of the sanctuary,

see this picture

but unlike My Son sanctuary C, at Pô Klaung Gerai the mandapa is located within
the enclosure. The Pô Klaung Gerai mandapa is therefore located between the gopura and
the main kalan

see this picture

and all three are in a line.
