Children of William Cornell (1783-1851) & Lucy Clark

Lucy Clark Cornell (1813-1870)

Born/Christened: September 21, 1813 in Little Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire.  Lucy died at the age of 56 and was buried on April 4, 1870 in Little Wilbraham.  It appears she did not marry.

William Cornell (1815-1849)

Born/Christened: December 16, 1815 in Little Wilbraham.

William worked as a carpenter. While still a youth he made his way to Cambridge, where rapid population increases were pushing up the need for housing. There William married Ann Buttress on March 17, 1839, when he was only 23 years old and she was 28. Ann was born in London in 1811, the daughter of Richard Buttress, and she was baptized as a Wesleyan at the Sion Chapel In St. Botolph, Aldgate on April 4, 1811, when a few weeks old.

William and Ann went to live at 13 Union Road in Cambridge. Union Road was a row of houses built in 1820. It Is part of what is called New Town in Cambridge, and the area is now a slum. While a drawing of 31 Union Road looks as though there is a walled yard at the back of the house, it is possible that the houses, when first built, did not have their individual pieces of ground marked out, but shared a common pump for water and an outhouse for sanitation.

William and Ann Cornell were still living on Union Road at the time of the 1841 census. They had a son, William Richard, by then, and also a lodger Joseph Clark. They had two more children, Edwin Elijah and David Clark Cornell. David's birth was registered by his father in December, 1843. They had two more sons, both of whom died as infants.  Then on August 15, 1849, William Cornell died of a 'six month decline'. Cambridge is set in a swamp and low-lying fen area, which at that time was not drained, Cholera and typhoid epidemics occured every summer, with particularly severe outbreaks in 1848 and 1849. For all Union Road was 'new' housing, it was ill-built housing for the poor, and also appreciation of the necessity for proper sewage disposal and clean water supply was not widespread at the time. At least one preacher attributed the outbreak of disease to God's displeasure with the people. It is also worth noting that William died In the village of Little Wilbraham, probably where he had gone to stay with relatives.

Ann was left a pauper, which may mean she received relief from the parish in Cambridge.  Ann continued to keep a home together with her children, and struggled to earn enough as a needlewoman. In 1851 the family was living at 14 Queen Street.  By 1861, we can see in the census the success of Ann's efforts. The family was living at this time at 17 Russell Street.  Ann was working in the skilled trade of upholstery. She took in two young boys as boarders while they attended school in the town. Her sons were all at trades, living at home. William Richard, 20 years old, was a carpenter; Edwin was helping a law stationer; David was a messenger for a bookseller.  Ann died in March 1868 in Cambridge at the age of 54.

Elijah Cornell (1819-1849)

Born/Christened: June 20, 1819 in Little Wilbraham.
Died: May 24, 1849, aged 30, in Little Wilbraham.
