Children of Marguerite Helena Rose Cornell (1889-1972) & Ernest Stuchbury

Margaret (Peggy) Stuchbury (1924-present)

Born: Jun 26, 1924, Southsea, England, while her Father was still in the Royal Navy, stationed at Portsmouth. Peg went to work at the local store in Cuckfield, Sussex, and drove the delivery van when all the men left for the war in 1939.  She also helped her parents in the White Harte during the evenings, a busy time with all the army personnel in the area.  Peg's Father was recalled for naval duty in 1941 and she herself joined the Women's Royal Naval Service in April 1942, serving in England and Northern Ireland as an ordnance air mechanic in the Fleet Air Arm until August 1945.  While serving at HMS Dipper in Somerset, she met Jack Swain, who was a Petty Officer (Airframes) - which meant they worked together on Spitfires.  Peg says Jack was useful in helping to lift the heavy 20 mm cannon guns into the aircraft.
Married: Jack Swain on November 7, 1944 in Cuckfield, Sussex. Jack was born December 30, 1921 in Southshields, Durham. He served in the Royal Navy during World War 2 as a Petty Officer. His post-war occupation was that of Carpenter.  Peg and Jack had two children.   When her children grew and left home, Peg decided to train as a nurse and she worked for 25 years after graduation at the local hospital.  Jack, a keen cricketer, died on September 23, 1995 in Cuckfield, Sussex.

John Stuchbury (1927-1975)

Born: Feb 20, 1927, Hassocks, Sussex.   John won a scholarship to Hove County School for Boys but left in 1942, at age 15, to join the Fleet Air Arm as an apprentice electrical engineer. After completing his apprenticeship, he travelled widely on aircraft carriers, mainly in the Far East, finishing his naval career as a Chief Petty Officer.  He played cricket for the Royal Navy.
Married: Molly Stuart on May 19. 1956, in Haywards Heath, Sussex. Molly was born August 5, 1934 in Shoreham. The couple lived in Scotland, where John worked for Grants Distillery as an electrical engineer.
John died on May 31, 1975, in Aberdeen, Scotland, of leukemia.

William Cornell Harrington (1916-present)

Born: 1916, Washington, D.C. His occupation was that of Geologist.
Married: Elizabeth Dillon Baker on August 26, 1943. Elizabeth was born on November 22, 1917. She and Bill had five children.

Jane Cornell Harrington (1920-present)

Born: Jan 7, 1920, Washington, D.C.  Jane went to school in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bexhill, Sussex, and in Berkley and Palo Alto, California, before attending Stanford University in Palo Alto, from which she graduated in 1941.  During World War 2, Jane worked for the U.S. Army at the Presidio in San Francisco, for the Department of State in Washington, DC, and for the American Red Cross in Brazil.
Married: William Jones on July 17, 1948 in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The two met in Puerto Rico at the end of the War. William was born on May 27, 1911 in Seattle, Washington. His occupation was that of Veterinarian. After his marriage he operated a veterinary clinic in Port of Spain, Trinidad.  He and Jane retired to Sarasota, Florida, where Bill died on August 21, 1988.   Since Bill's death, Jane has lived quietly in Sarasota, contributing her time and knowledge as a volunteer at Selby Botanical Gardens, Sarasota County Library and the Sarasota Music Archive. She has travelled widely, always learning all she could about her destination, including the language in some instances, before beginning the trip. Jane is fluent in Spanish and can converse in French and Italian; she is now planning to learn Portuguese.  In 1996, Jane was present at the dedication of the William R. Jones Chair in Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University.

Hugh David Harrington (1926-1961)

Born: September 26, 1926, Buenos Aires, Agentina. David went to England with his family several times before they moved to California in 1934, spending one year in school in Bexhill, Sussex, England.  He went to school in Palo Alto and served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2.  After the War David attended San Jose State University, where he graduated in Engineering.  While still in Palo Alto, David developed an interest in sailing and, as time went on, became a good yachtsman.
Married: Barbara Griffin. Barbara was born on August 24, 1925 in Oakland, California.  The couple moved to Marin County, just north of San Francisco and had two sons.
David died in 1961 in San Francisco. He was working on the construction of a bayshore area south of San Francisco Airport.  When commuting home one evening in 1961, a car traveling in the opposite direction crossed the median of the freeway and David was killed in the ensuing collision.


Children of Frederick Charles Douglas Cornell (1892-1952) & Vera Haigh West

Elizabeth Ann Cornell (1937-present)

Born: March 1, 1937, Sleaford, Lincolnshire. Elizabeth was educated at the Commonweal Grammar School in Swindon, Wiltshire and later worked as a secretary. With a friend, she emigrated to Canada on the Cunard Ship H.M.S. Scythia, arriving at the Port of Quebec on September 5, 1955, and travelling by overnight train to Toronto.  In 1957/58, Elizabeth travelled through the United States and Mexico, visited her Aunt Lou in Palo Alto, California, and spent a number of months in Kitimat, British Columbia, before returning to Toronto.
Married: David Head on March 11, 1960 in Toronto, Ontario. David was born August 29, 1935 in Toronto. He was a policeman with the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force and he retired in January 1992 with the rank of sergeant.  After retirement David and Elizabeth lived in Midland, Ontario.  The couple has spent vacations in Mexico and in England and France and for ten years lived in Sarasota, Florida, during the winter. In 1998 Elizabeth made a tour of coastal and Andean Peru, fulfilling an interest and wish of many years' standing. David and Elizabeth had two sons and the family grew up in the Toronto suburb of Willowdale.  David died on January 24, 2006 in Midland, Ontario.

Rosemary Jane Cornell (1938-present)

Born: Dec 15, 1938, Sleaford, Lincolnshire. Rosemary went to London to train to become a nurse but, quickly realizing she didn't have such dedication, she followed her sister to Canada in July 1957. Her occupation was bank teller.
Married: Ernst Andernacht November 21, 1958 in Toronto, Ontario. Ernst was born on April 6, 1936 in Hamm, Germany and was a tool and die maker. He and Rose had three children and the family grew up in and around Toronto. Vacation times were spent camping throughout Ontario and the family has been to Germany several times to meet the Andernacht family.   Rosemary and Ernie are now retired and are busy continuing their genealogical research of the vast Andernacht family.

John Malcolm Cornell (1938-present)

Born: Apr 15, 1938, Brighton, Sussex.  When his mother, Bertha, died shortly after his birth, John was adopted and raised by Alexander Douglas Cornell and his wife.  The family stayed in the Bromley area where John trained in mechanical engineering with the Ministry of Defence, later becoming a mechanical and electrical draughtsman.   In 1965 John decided on a career change and studied at King Alfred's College, Winchester, to be a teacher.  He also studied for an arts degree with the Open University.
Married: Helen Christine Watson on August 2, 1969 and moved to Aylesford, Kent. Helen was born September 19, 1946, in the Lake District, England.  Helen had worked in the science field, mainly in the food industry, before their two children were born. Later she studied for an Open University degree and worked as a librarian, being in charge of ten public libraries in an area near Maidstone, Kent.  After his retirement John began tutoring students who need extra help, especially in mathematics, and ran a small business involving wood carving and historical model making.  John's additional interests are old aircraft - he works as a volunteer repairing and restoring WW2 airplanes, including Spitfires - and growing Bonsai trees.

Ann Thornton (1935-1995)

Born: Jun 10, 1935.
Married: Michael Bickell on June 21, 1958.  Michael was born on July 19, 1936 in Bristol.  Michael and Ann had three children and the family lived in Limpsfield Chart, Surrey.
Died: Mar 28, 1995.

Edna Thornton (1936-2002)

Born: October 28, 1936.
Married William Hudson on July 30, 1956 in London. The couple emigrated to Canada, living in Hamilton, Ontario, and then Toronto. Bill and Edna had two daughters. Edna was involved extensively in community activities from her arrival in Canada in 1956, and was President of the Toronto Regional Architectural Conservancy. She wrote and edited several books about buildings of interest in Toronto.
Died: August 12, 2002 of cancer in Toronto and is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.

Richard Thornton (1942-1990)

Born: March 4, 1942.
Married:  Geraldine J. Bailey in 1965 in Kingston on Thames.
Died: October 1990.

Edwin Beeching Cornell (1926-1994)

Born: May 3, 1926 in Stanford, Kent.  Edwin (Eddie) attended the Harvey Grammar School in Folkestone before moving away with his parents during the war, when he attended Marlborough Grammar School in Wiltshire.  Although he wanted to follow his father into the Royal Air Force, Edwin eventually joined the Royal Tank Regiment as a wireless operator/driver on Sherman tanks and, in 1946, as a Company Sergeant Major, went to Egypt.  He was subsequently employed as MT Sergeant with an East African unit before being sent to Durban as a Warrant Officer Instructor to recruit and train High Commission Territories troops (Basuto, Bechuana and Swazi) for guard duties in the Suez Canal Zone.  On his return to England, Eddie joined British Rail, eventually transferring to the Shipping and Continental Department at Folkestone Harbour.
Married: Eva Hayden on August 7, 1948 in Lechdale, Gloucestershire. Eva was born November 3, 1926.  She was a member of the Girls' Training Corps.  As sergeant in the ATC, it was Eddie's duty to give the girls foot drill and Morse code instructions on one evening per week.  There were dances where friendships blossomed  and the two fell in love and married.  From 1949 to 1958, Eva worked as a secretary at Stanford Mill, corn and seed merchants.  Eddie and Eva had two children.
Died: April 2, 1994.

Kenneth Cornell (1930-present)

Born: October 17, 1930.
Kenneth had always been interested in farming and, on leaving school, worked on a farm at Kempsford until the family returned to Stanford in 1945.  Then he worked at various local farms before long term employment at Hayton Manor Farm.
Married: Pat Thornby April 12, 1952.  Pat was from Smeeth, where the couple now resides.  Kenneth and Pat had two sons.

Michael R. Aldridge (1929-1987)

Born: May 20, 1929 in Kingston District.
Married: Joy Alway on April 2, 1953.  Michael and Joy had two children.
Died: October 30, 1987, aged 58.

Children of Norman Harradance Cornell (1907-1975) & Winnifred Irene Hine

Ann Sylvia Cornell (1937-present) 

Born: November 7, 1937 at Tonbridge, Kent.  Ann was educated at Gravesend Technical High School, taking a commercial course, and on leaving school in 1954 joined one of the major banks in the City of London.  She worked in various departments at Head Office for about ten years, then transferred to a local branch.  Ann is now retired and enjoying her free time to pursue a variety of interests, mainly golf, watercolour painting and genealogy.

Janice Penelope Kirby (1942-present) 

Born: July 20, 1942. 
As a member of the 3rd Bromley Company of the Girls' Life Brigade, Janice won the prestigious Queen's Badge, one of only three awarded that year in the whole of England.  The presentation ceremony was held at the Royal Albert Hall.  Janice performed voluntary social service every Saturday morning at the Beckenham Hospital, where she helped in the dispensary.  This must have awakened an interest as in 1967 Janice graduated from University with a B.Pharm.
Married: Trevor Rowland Smith on August 19, 1978 at Christchurch Methodist Church, Worcester Park.  Janice took lessons for violin, flute and piano from childhood and now leads the 2nd violins in the Croydon Symphony Orchestra.  She is a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry but has worked for various organizations over the years.  Trevor graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Liverpool University in 1963 and has had a varied career in science and engineering.  He retired in December 2001 and is following his favourite hobby of computer-based orchestral composition.  Janice and Trevor had two sons.

Pamela Romaine Cornell (1939-present) 

Born: October 30, 1939 in Eastbourne.  Pamela was educated at Eastbourne Commercial School and went into banking.
Married: David Frank Hawes on August 15, 1959 in Eastbourne.  David was born in Eastbourne on November 9, 1934.  Pamela and David had four children.  After her children grew up, Pamela became a medical secretary to an orthopaedic surgeon and is now enjoying retirement, taking holidays abroad and the grandchildren.

Veronica Margaret Cornell (1946-present)

Born: March 24, 1946 in Eastbourne.  Veronica was educated at Eastbourne High School and trained as a hairdresser.
Married: Robert William Parker on March 19, 1966.  Robert was born September 17, 1944.  The couple had three children but is now divorced.

Andrew Nicholas Cornell (1949-present)

Born: January 15, 1949 in Eastbourne.  Andrew was educated in Eastbourne.
Married: Jeannette Annitta Hurd on May 30, 1970.  Anitta was born on June 2, 1950.  Andrew and Annitta have two children.  Andrew works as a Planning and Purchasing Engineer.

James Philip Cornell (1952-present)

Born: March 12, 1952 in Eastbourne.  James was educated in Eastbourne and trained as a cabinet maker.
Married: Susan Linda Wathen on June 24, 1972 in Eastbourne.  Susan was born on December 16, 1953 in Eastbourne, the only daughter of three children born to Hilda and Sydney Wathen.  James and Susan have two children.  Due to chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis, James now works as a Timber Buyer for a reproduction furniture factory.
